Teacher Volunteers
(No previous training or experience needed)

At present we are simply building a registry of potential teacher volunteers since our program is not yet complete. There are no prerequisites for teachers except that they speak English well. You do not need a teaching certificate or other teaching background. Teacher volunteers are often young people desiring travel, work or life experience, or often they are early retirees who are willing to provide a very worthwhile service for mankind.

Volunteers must pay their own air travel to and from their assignments, but they receive free room and board. Positions are unsalaried and assignments are for a school year.

The nature of the ACCESS (Auxiliary Closed Caption English with Simplified Spelling) System that we use for teaching is that the success of the program is assured by the standardization provided by the video instructional tapes, rather than by the previous professional experience of the teachers.

The role of the teacher is to coordinate the students’ activities, making sure that the video tapes are presented at the proper time and that by using the teacher guides, the students are led through their workbooks and practice exercises in the proper order.

The teachers do not need to speak the language of the country because the teaching method is similar to that of a mother whose child does not initially share a language with its teacher. The country host is asked to provide the teacher with a mentor to translate regarding local needs, and we will endeavour to send teachers out in pairs so as to reduce the problem of culture shock.

Teachers need to have the proper adventuresome spirit to take on these assignments. It is a great way to see the world and to become acquainted with another culture, or perhaps to become reacquainted with one’s parents’ or ancestors’ previous culture. Rather than staying for three days in a hotel and seeing the tourist sights, one can really get to know the people and culture while providing a great service to them. For retirees it is also usually cheaper than living at home.

We are developing a correspondence teacher training package, of which the first five lessons have been written. The plan is to bring teachers who have completed the correspondence program to one of two sites (one is in Ontario and the other is in Kansas) for two weeks final training before they leave for their overseas assignments.

Editor Volunteers

Please, please become an editor volunteer. Our forty-thousand definition simplified dictionary data base simply needs volunteers who speak good English to edit it.

There are many different tasks involved. In December of 1997, 80 volunteer editors finished making up example simple sentences for each of the words on the data base.

Our NEXT task will be syllibification of the Angel Translation of the word list. As a volunteer, you will be trained how to do this task. It is a tremendous long work, but many hands will make short work of it.

In the future there will be the compiling, translating and simplifying of glossaries for various disciplines, such as medicine, chemistry, air line pilots, ships captains, and so forth.

We will also be editing some subsets of the dictionary data base, (indeed the first ones that we shall publish).

You need only basic word processor skills and the willingness to devote about two hours a week (or as much more as you like) to a project. You need know nothing about markup or parts of speech as that is not involved.

You will be sent the files by email, and will return them the same way. The idea behind this dictionary is that the user needs to know less than 1,000 words to be able to look up over forty thousand definitions and their conventional English spelling.

Chancellor Volunteers
The World Language Program, as of June 1st, 1997, has Chancellors in 30 countries as listed in the

Directory of Chancellors

If you reside in a country other than one of 30 listed and are a professor in a university or of equal rank, such as a medical doctor or in a similarly ranked government position, please use the volunteer form to receive information outlining a chancellor's responsibilities. Your inquiry will be greatly appreciated.

Artist/Illustrator Volunteers

This really needs one or two full-time volunteers to draw the 4,800 common items for the student workbooks. There are often many items combined in one picture such as in a kitchen or living room. These will be simplified drawings which we may also use in the dictionary.

This would be a full-time one year task for one individual. It is possible that compensation might be provided on some limited deferred royalty basis.

If anyone knows of an accomplished illustrator in a monastery or prison with a lot of time on their hands and who would be willing to take on this task please let them know about this great opportunity for service to humanity.

Layout Volunteers

This may be a difficult category of volunteers to fill. While we have a very skilled volunteer layout artist who has agreed to make templates for the workbooks and teacher guides, finding a group of volunteers who all have the same software as one another, may be very difficult if not impossible. Any ideas will be appreciated.

Animation Volunteers

We are trying to add variety to the hours of video tape that we are editing. We have always thought some animations of some simple concepts would be great. If you would be willing to try doing a sample we will be glad to send you a story board and discuss with you what approach you would like to take.

Nonlinear Video Editor Volunteers

These volunteers have to be willing to come to a small village north of Toronto, Canada, or to a small town in Kansas. Very non-luxurious room and board is all that can be provided but their contribution will be greatly appreciated. So far a half dozen hours of video have been completed by volunteer editors but another dozen hours remain to be done. Please talk with us about any possibilities.

State and Provincial Volunteer Coordinators

At the moment we are only trying to build the network of coordinators. Presently there is nothing to do but fill the slot and become increasingly acquainted with the program.

Eventually we will need coordinators in all the major cities and it will be their task to provide teacher recruitment information at such locations as local fairs and in malls and to provide personal contact for people that we meet through the Internet.

Web Pal Volunteers

The Web Pal program is just starting. As we go along it is beginning to redefine itself in some ways.

At first we thought that Web Pal would mainly be of interest, to people in other countries, who wanted to learn English. Now, we discover, that actually a lot of people in North America, are interested in the program to learn other languages.

At this moment we have over a dozen coordinators for the program, but we may need lots more, if the program begins to grow quickly. We may eventually need to assign new coordinators to specific languages.

The other thing that we are discovering, is that we really have a new category called, "Web Pal Teacher". We would like to build up a registry of volunteers, who will act as English teachers in the Web Pal relationship.

All the teacher needs to do is correspond with someone in another country who would like to improve their English. As a Web Pal "teacher" you do not need any previous teaching experience.
