9. If you like, you can look at our Honor List for groups that we know of that have an existing rural location. Most of these, however, have no direct interest or preparation in regards to nuclear survival. At the bottom of this page is a Directory of our contacts in New Hampshire. Many of the local entries for states were listed because of their Y2K concerns and may not have any nuclear concerns.

Monadnock Ecovillage
The Founding and Design of a Small Community for Living Mindfully, Sustainably, and Lightly in Our Place
Monadnock Ecovillage is a new community being designed in association with the Gaia Education Outreach Institute in Temple, New Hampshire. We share the same goals to demonstrate and educate for mindful, ecologically sustainable ways of living and community.
In the spring of 1998 we are inviting suggestions and inquiries about our founding process as we prepare to continue last summer's design work in our annual Geocommons College Year Summer Institute in Sustainable Living and Ecological/Permaculture Design. In these summer sessions students of mixed ages join our experienced faculty at the ecovillage site for two to three weeks of training in sustainable life skills and permaculture design, using the site as a learning laboratory.
Our proposed ecovillage site is Derbyshire Farm, a beautiful, 75-acre, New England hill farm bordering 2000 acres of protected mountain wilderness on the eastern flanks of Pack and North Pack Monadnock Mountains in southern New Hampshire. Existing housing and farm buildings can serve a dozen or more guests for shorter stays. We have recently purchased a run-down, adjoining, 40-acre farm which we hope to use for educational activities. We are exploring ways to raise funds to acquire additional surrounding lands and transfer the farm ownership into an educational land trust.
Our ecovillage design may include off-the-grid cohousing clusters, organic gardening and farming, green businesses, retreat and semi-wild areas, and two educational projects, the Monadnock Life Education Center and Geocommons College Year. We are wishing to integrate family, livelihood, energy conserving housing, farming, mindfulness meditation, recreation, arts, celebration, and lifelong learning in one sustaining place of community and nature. In stage one, we envision building ten to twelve household units in two clusters on Derbyshire Farm. The second stage will involve expansion onto surrounding properties as we are able to acquire these.
We welcome participants of diverse ages, skills, and backgrounds. This work requires strong commitment to education, community building, personal inquiry, sustainability, voluntary simplicity, and mindfulness.
